During the late Victorian period 1880-1901 also known as the 'Aesthetic' period, was a period inspired by simple naturalistic asymmetrical themes such as birds, leaves and Japanese-style elements such as bamboo. Japanese trade relations had opened up and a simpler refined sense of design was popular. Japonesque design included birds, bamboo and fans.
Our 1879 Japonesque brooch is set in sterling silver, the brooch features a bird who looks to be singing sitting on a branch. On the back of brooch it is marked indicating the piece was hallmarked in Birmingham, England in 1879 from sterling silver. The brooch is heavy in weight, in excellent condition.
